We believe that it is important to pass down the lessons learned from disasters to the next generation, and we are working to archive them in the form of videos.

3.11 Memorial Network, a collaborative organization for handing down earthquake disaster lore”, we are distributing videos of storytellers in Tohoku.
The memories and lessons learned from the disaster that must never be forgotten will be preserved in the form of images that will be passed on to the future without fading, and will be useful for disaster prevention and mitigation in each region.

Mr. Shuichi Daibo, Taro, Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture

Mr. Shuichi Daibo, Chairman of NPO Tsunami Taro. Taro was hit by the Sanriku tsunami in the Meiji and Showa eras and is nicknamed "Tsunami Taro" (Taro). Despite efforts to build a tsunami-resistant town, such as the construction of a huge seawall, Taro was once again severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake. We interviewed Mr. Daibo, who considers past, present, and future tsunami disaster prevention in the area, examines the situation at the time of the earthquake, and continues to share the efforts of his predecessors and the lessons learned from the disaster.

Ms.Mai Yanai, Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture

Ms. Mai Yanai is active in the disaster prevention activity group "Yumedan - ONE TEAM connecting to the future -" consisting of volunteer high school students in Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture. Ms. Yanai, who attended a nursery school at the time of the earthquake, is now in her third year of high school. (*At the time of filming) As the last generation to remember the earthquake, through their own experiences, they are conveying knowledge of disaster prevention and the importance of human connection in case of emergency.

Mr. Akira Kugiko, the representative of "Rikuzentakata disaster area storyteller Kugikoya".
At the time of the earthquake, Rikuzentakata City was affected by the disaster and was involved in setting up and operating an evacuation center.
Currently, in the form of a storyteller project, we are conveying the situation at that time, the reconstruction situation, and messages for disaster prevention and mitigation all over the country.

Ms. Mikiko Asanuma, Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture

Ms. Mikiko Asanuma is the representative of Rikuzentakata's "Hanamizuki no Michi" Association. Ms. Asanuma is working to plant dogwood trees as landmarks on Symbol Road, an evacuation route that extends from the sea side to the mountain side of Rikuzentakata City. A monument on the site reads, "Run up this road to a higher place!" She is working to hand down the lessons of the earthquake so that the same sadness and suffering will never be repeated.

Ms.Chiharu Yoshida,Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture

Ms.Chiharu Yoshida, the representative of Kesennuma Otohimekai. Based on her own experiences, Ms. Yoshida continues to work as a storyteller in Kesennuma, where she was born and raised. In addition to conveying the awareness of disaster prevention that she has been taught since childhood, she is working hard to pass down earthquake disasters and disaster prevention activities from a unique perspective as a woman.
What should each person prepare and how should she act in order to protect her own life? We asked Ms. Yoshida about his thoughts.

Hiroyuki Abe, director of the Sanriku Recovery Tourism Concierge Center, is engaged in unique recovery tourism and storytelling activities based on his own experiences with the disaster. Based on the limitations of conventional disaster prevention techniques that we learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake, we are strongly conveying to the next generation the importance of coexistence with nature and the ability to survive with limited infrastructure.

Shun Ito, the representative of the Minamisanriku Town Development Platform, conducts storytelling activities in the form of bus tours. Minamisanriku Town has suffered damage from tsunamis in the past, but it is said that the lessons learned have been passed down and many lives were saved during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Please take a look at the message that Mr. Ito will pass on to the next generation.

Mr.Takayuki and Ms.Hiromi Tamura lost their 25-year-old son, Kenta, in the earthquake. Kenta, who was working for a local company, was ordered to evacuate and remained on the roof of a two-story building at the time. Mr. and Mrs. Tamura continue to raise issues to society, asking how companies and organizations should protect the lives of their employees, appealing for thorough and improved corporate disaster prevention.

Ms.Kyomi Takahashi, from Minamihamacho, Ishinomaki City, lost her parents and family home in the earthquake. Through storytelling activities, Ms. Kyomi conveys her memories of her family and of this town, which is her hometown, to future generations. continue.

Yu Iwakura, who was in the second grade of elementary school at the time of the earthquake, is now a university student. I am sharing my experiences from that time in Nagoya, where I went to university. Mr. Iwakura survived despite losing the town where he was born and raised. Overcoming his struggles, he continues to convey his message in places far away from Tohoku, ``I want everyone to see the earthquake as their own personal experience.''

Ms. Honoka Shino is active in communicating her own disaster experiences while attending university. (* At the time of shooting)
At the time of the earthquake, Shino was in the sixth grade at Nobiru Elementary School in Higashimatsushima City. She started storytelling activities when she was in high school, and has continued to convey the lessons learned from the disaster, such as the importance of everyday life.

Ms.Yuko Tanno, Natori City, Miyagi Prefecture

Ms. Yuko Tanno, the representative of the general incorporated association "Memory of Yuriage". His 13-year-old son, Kota, was killed in the tsunami. A cenotaph was erected by the bereaved family association of Yuriage Junior High School, and as a shrine office to protect the cenotaph and as a place to organize and convey important memories, the Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Museum "Yuriage Memories" was built. While protecting the cenotaph, Mr. Tanno himself conveys the importance of life and precious memories as a storyteller.

Ms. Yoshiko Aoki, the representative of Tomioka Town 3.11 Talking Group. At the time of the earthquake, she was involved in support activities at the Odagaisama Center, which was set up in an evacuation center, and started activities mainly in Tomioka Town, where she was deeply involved as a teacher. In a town that was caught up in an unprecedented nuclear disaster, Ms. Aoki continues to talk about his aim to revitalize the area.

Mr.Akihiro Ono, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture

Mr.Akihiro Ono is the youngest storyteller  at the Iwaki Earthquake Tradition Museum. Mr. Ono is one of the survivors who turned his camera on the tsunami approaching his home and was swallowed by it. Reflecting on his own choice not to run away from home at the time of the disaster, he continues to pass on the lessons he learned from the disaster, telling him not to waste his life that was saved.

Visualization of traditions other than the Great East Japan Earthquake

In addition to visualizing the storytelling activities of the Great East Japan Earthquake, we have also started visualizing the records and memories of various past disasters.
By taking up examples from various regions, we will distribute videos so that more people can make disaster prevention and mitigation their own.

Great Kanto Earthquake Edition Kazuko Hoshino

In September 2023, it will be 100 years since the Great Kanto Earthquake. As a special edition of the earthquake disaster archive, we interviewed Ms. Kazuko Hoshino of the Odawara Shidankai, who is working on "rubbed copies" that copy the stone monuments of the earthquake. Please take a look at the memory of the Great Kanto Earthquake in Odawara, which is close to the epicenter, and the message conveyed by history.
